SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Springfield police shot a man after he hit an officer with a car outside police headquarters.

Police Chief Paul Williams says the man became irate after being asked to leave the headquarters Tuesday morning. Williams says the man came back in an SUV and when an officer tried to flag him down, the man drove toward him, crushing him against a barrier.

The officer was talking and breathing when he was taken to a hospital. Williams says the man was shot after he refused to stop and get out of the vehicle.

He was taken to a hospital. Chief Williams says police are trying to determine the man's motives.
