Tiger at Dickerson Park Zoo Dies

DPZ

Petra, an 18 1/2 –year-old Malayan tiger who came to Springfield's Dickerson Park Zoo from the San Diego Zoo in 2004, was humanely euthanized Tuesday due to declining health from age-related issues, according to zoo officials.  They noticed her slowing down and sleeping more, and in the past week "there was a significant change in her quality of life," a zoo news release states.

During a physical exam Tuesday, a zoo vet discovered that Petra was suffering from renal disease and vertebral spinal issues.

Petra recovered in 2016 after losing her front leg in an accident with the male tiger, Bunga.

The average lifespan of a Malayan tiger is 16 years. Petra was one of the oldest Malayan tigers in an Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoo.
