Reserve tickets for public affairs signature events

Big things are happening at Missouri State University, and Missourians as a whole are making an impact on the world. That’s part of what the Missouri State public affairs mission is all about: being a part of a global community. Mary Ann Wood, director of public affairs support, and Stephanie Lashley, senior director of donor relations and special events for the Missouri State Foundation, discuss the opening plenary speaker for the Missouri State University Public Affairs Conference and the Missouri Public Affairs Hall of Fame.

Lashley notes that the Missouri State Foundation puts their efforts into supporting initiatives that are important to the campus and to the community as a whole.

Ripken, a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, retired from baseball in October 2001 after 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Famous for redefining the position of shortstop, he is also only one of eight players in history to achieve 400 home runs and 3,000 hits. Since retirement, he constructed a baseball complex in his hometown of Aberdeen, Maryland which holds The Aberdeen Project, consisting of Ripken Stadium and the Ripken Youth Baseball Academy. This is a state-of-the-art minor league ballpark and it hosts ballplayers and teams from across the country for camps and tournaments during the spring, summer and fall.

Wood said he epitomizes the ethical athlete – on and off the field.

Another public affairs signature event, the Missouri Public Affairs Hall of Fame, will be held Friday, April 17. Although it’s a statewide honor, Lashley explains MSU’s tie to this second annual event.

The Missouri Public Affairs Hall of Fame honors individuals, who through their academic, personal or professional achievements, demonstrate active civic engagement to improve the lives of others. Wood introduces this year’s honorees.
