The American Red Cross has opened a service center in Springfield for residents of Louisiana and Mississippi who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
Ridgecrest Baptist Church has made Remington's in south Springfield available to the Red Cross for its service center.
Marissa DeClue is the spokeswoman for the Red Cross Disaster Services Center in Springfield.
Marissa says she's been too busy helping people to do a head count but she estimates that as of noon Tuesday, the first day the service center was open, about one hundred people had come through the doors.
As of Monday evening, 509 people had visited the Red Cross in Springfield and Branson seeking assistance.
DeClue says this influx of out-of-state people to Red Cross disaster centers in Southwest Missouri is unusual.
The Red Cross is still accepting monetary donations.
