Driving can be risky business—that’s the message young people in CoxHealth’s Risky Business Safe driving program for teens heard today from a variety of people who know first-hand just how true that statement is. Students went thru several rotations. They visited the morgue, watched a film showing the repercussions of car accidents, heard from people whose loved ones were killed in car accidents and visited the ICU and the ER where health professionals explained to them in detail what trauma patients go thru…Students also had the chance to ride in a simulator—the seat belt convincer, which mimics a five-mile-per-hour crash…Benjamin Haworth volunteered to try out the simulator. He says he’s run into two fence posts, so the impact didn’t surprise him. He was wearing his seatbelt and wasn’t injured, but it made him see firsthand the importance of wearing one. His parents signed him up for the Risky Business class…Jami Blackwell is injury prevention coordinator at CoxHealth. She hopes what the students take away with them today will stay with them…The teens also visited the Cox Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy departments to learn how difficult it is to recover after a car accident, and members of the Springfield Police Department talked to the teens about fatal choices.To find out more about the Risky Business program, call 269-0919.
