Update: 1:51 p.m. 8-14-14: Schools told to release lockdowns.

The search for a federal fugitive in southwest Springfield has prompted officials with Springfield Public Schools to lock down three of its campuses as a precautionary measure.

This is a standard step for the district in such situations.

The district said on its website that Bright Stars Early Childhood Center, Jeffries Elementary School and Carver Middle School have secured all exterior doors and will not allow students outside the building until the situation is resolved.

“If the situation is not resolved by the end of the school day and changes to dismissal procedures are required, parents will be notified via an AlertNow telephone message,” the school said.

Greene County sheriff’s deputies are receiving assistance from Battlefield Police and the Missouri State Highway Patrol in the search for 41-year-old Gary D. Orrick.

The Sheriff’s office, in a message posted on social media, said that a deputy “attempted to contact Orrick after observing some specious behavior” Thursday morning in the 3100 block of W. Roxbury. The suspect then fled.

More from the Sheriff’s office:

The GCSO has established a perimeter in the area and are utilizing one of the GCSO K9 units and the MSHP helicopter to search for Orrick. He is described as a white male, 5ft 9 in, 160 lbs, short hair and was last seen wearing a sleeveless yellow or orange-colored shirt and long shorts with tattoos on his arms and legs. He should be considered dangerous and not be contacted or approached - please call 9-1-1. Orrick has an active warrant issued from the FBI for Unlawful Acquisition of a Firearm.
