Community Cornerstones: Springfield's Black Educators

Community Cornerstones: Springfield's Black Educators

The History Museum on the Square invites the public to our newest exhibit, Community Cornerstones: Springfield’s Black Educators. This exhibit showcases the rich history of Black American education in Springfield through the lens of the educators who were the cornerstones of the Black community. Experience the enlightening story of Springfield’s Black educational history and its connection to a national conversation.

This exhibit opens on Wednesday, February 1st and runs through May 7th. This exhibit is included in general admission and free to members and patrons.

“The entire History Museum on the Square team is extremely proud of the work we put into Community Cornerstones: Springfield’s Black Educators,” explains Sean FitzGibbons, Executive Director of the History Museum on the Square. “Also, the History Museum is thrilled that the Community Foundation of the Ozarks supported this exhibit and ancillary programming through the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Grant Program. We collaborated with many partners to ensure that the stories we share truly reflect the significant impact these educators and institutions made on Springfield. ”

“The CFO is pleased to support this exhibit and the related school-based programming. The History Museum's effort to preserve oral histories from lived experiences lifts up important pieces of Springfield's history.” says Bridget Dierks, Community Foundation of the Ozarks Vice President of Programs.

In addition to the temporary exhibit in the History Museum’s Voices of History Gallery, this project touches on all aspects of the museum’s programming; there will be presentations, workshops, and traveling exhibits. The History Museum would like to thank its partners; the M&G History Keepers, Missouri State University Libraries Special Collections and Archives, Springfield Greene County Library’s Local History and Genealogy department, and Springfield-Greene County Park Board’s Timmons Hall.
