Missouri State University’s Theater and Dance Department has announced the lineup of its annual Tent Theatre. KSMU’s Samuel Crowe reports that this season will feature two musicals and one comedy-drama.

The 51stannual Tent Theatre begins with the musical “110 in the Shade” during mid to late June.

“Steel Magnolias,” a comedy drama set in a small Southern town, will be featured in late June through early July. The final production will be “Damn Yankees,” during mid-July and starring MSU theatre alum Dale Hensley.

Mark Templeton is the managing director of the Theater and Dance Department at MSU. He says it’s been awhile since “Damn Yankees” and “110 in the Shade” have been featured at Tent Theatre, and this is the first summer for “Steel Magnolias.”

“We like to put on productions that are known, number one. But then we do want to keep it fresh and the way we approach each production is fresh. People come to Tent because it’s a unique experience. They may have seen these titles elsewhere, but I doubt they have seen it under the confines of a tent. So that’s very important to us,” Templeton said.

Tickets for the shows go on sale May 20th, and Templeton says they sell out quick. Patrons can even order a picnic supper before each show, with proceeds supporting the Tent Theatre scholarship fund.
