Springfield Little Theatre This Season Presents Les Miserables

Les Miserables will be playing this season at the Springfield Little Theatre. KSMU’s Matthew Barnes reports.

Les Mis was held from public licensing for several years, so Springfield Little Theater considers itself lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to produce the show. Beth Doman is the Executive Director for the Little Theater.

“We already had our season picked out and planned. And that kind of just threw that all up in the air, so we kind of had to go back to the drawing board a little bit until we found out for sure we had the rights. And so we’ve got the license and everything and we are pretty excited. It’s a big show. It is huge,” says Doman.

The play follows the character Jean Valjean who was imprisoned for the stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family.

“The first time I ever saw that show I remember sitting in my seat in Kansas City gripping the sides of the chair with tears just streaming down your face because it’s so intense in a good way. It’s about a revolution. It’s about redeeming yourself,” says Doman.

According to Doman, while much of the show is still in its planning stages the theatre expects to hold casting audition sometime in July. Though it’s considered to be a bigger play than  what the theater has typically had in the past Doman expects it to be handled smoothly.

“It’s big but’ Beauty and the Beast’ was big, ‘Cats’ was big. So as far as cast size goes it’s not any bigger than any of that,” says Doman.
