Highs today will be in the upper 60s under sunny skies—hard to believe a winter storm is headed our way. This is no early April Fool’s joke. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Western Missouri and Northwest Arkansas tomorrow evening thru Sunday evening. According to the National Weather Service, just in time for spring, a significant winter storm is expected to impact the Ozarks. Jason Schaumann is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Springfield...
"Right now what we're thinking is significant amounts of snow and sleet are possible, generally along and west of the Highway 65 corridor."
Snow and sleet accumulations of six or more inches are possible across Western Missouri. Schaumann says travelers need to keep up with what the weather forecast is saying.How can it be 67 degrees one day and cold and snowy the next?
"Welcome to spring in the Ozarks. That's just the way it is around here. We saw the severe weather last week. We've got some warmer weather here starting late this week, and then we're going to switch right back to winter as we get into Saturday and Sunday...just kind of a roller coaster ride. Believe it or not, now, as we get into the middle portion of next week, we're looking at temperatures near 60 again."
Schaumann says the rain this weekend and melting snow next week could lead to flooding in the area.
He says rain should start tonight into tomorrow morning and will transition to sleet and snow tomorrow afternoon and evening. The winter weather should start moving out sometime Sunday evening.
