Using social media and word of mouth, a Springfield musician is calling together local performers of all ages to recreate a historic photo. KSMU’s Amber Carr has the details.
For several years Steven Spencer has wanted to team up with Springfield musicians to recreate Art Kane’s 1958 photograph, A Great Day in Harlem, which helped launch Kane’s career.
“You know, it’s an iconic photo, you know? Anybody in the music world knows that photo,” explained Spencer.
About 300 people are expected to participate in the photo shoot this Saturday to support Spencer’s vision, including local hip-hop artist Logan Smith.
“I’m really happy about it because I’m about to actually move to go play music elsewhere, so I’m really kinda glad that I’m here, you know, now so I can get in on this picture since I have been living in Springfield my whole life,” said Smith.
Spencer says area musicians of all ages and genres are encouraged to attend and be a part of the historic photo shoot. He notes that the community support has been strong throughout the planning stage.
“This is a great little town and it’s got a lot of great people in it and to pull these people together like this is…amazes me and I just want them to have something that they’ll be proud of,” described Spencer.
Saturday’s photo shoot begins at 12p.m. at the Art Museum amphitheater next to Phelps Grove Park.
