We’re pleased to announce a new addition to our staff. Scott Harvey began his role as KSMU News Director & Content Coordinator on November 1. In addition to leading the KSMU local news team, he’ll act as host and producer for some OPT local programs including Sense of Community and Jeff City Journal. A graduate of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Scott comes to us from KETR in Commerce, TX where he has just finished a five-year stint as News Director and host of Morning Edition. Scott’s background in public media and expertise in digital storytelling made him an ideal choice for the position. To help you get to know him better, we posed the following questions to Scott:
Q: There are many outlets available to journalists today. What draws you to public media?
I find public media programs and people engaging, educational, and am often inspired by their unique storytelling ability. We strive to bring you both sides of the story and further explore issues and ideas that are impacting the lives of our listeners and viewers. These are the stories I’m attracted to when listening to great public media programs, and they’re stories I enjoy researching when preparing to inform our local audience.
Q: What attracted you to Springfield and Ozarks Public Broadcasting?
I was attracted to the quality of local programs and talent of the professional staff and student broadcasters. The opportunity to work with these individuals and help add to an already well respected and robust service was very inviting. Having grown up in the Midwest, I am excited to return the area, and be closer to family and friends. I feel very comfortable in Springfield, which I see as a wonderful place to live, work and grow.
Q: You’ll wear several different hats in your roll at Ozarks Public Broadcasting. Which are you most excited about?
Getting to know the audience and to understand the stories that matter to them is always an exciting opportunity. I look forward to meeting new people while working to inform everyone of what’s taking place in our community.
Q: What’s your vision for KSMU as its incoming news director?
KSMU has a lot of quality news programs already in place. I see opportunity in expanding the digital news platform and enhancing the audience experience. I also look forward to maintaining and helping to expand our relationships throughout the community to better understand who we’re informing and the stories that matter to them.
Q: You’re an experienced journalist who has covered a variety of areas and topics. Do you have a favorite?
It’s all very exciting because with each new story I’m learning something new and able to pass along new information to the audience. I enjoy producing human interest pieces as well as stories on economic development.
Q: How do you spend your time when you’re not at work?
I find great relaxation from activities that keep me outdoors or on the move. Taking walks or long drives to absorb the scenery and discovering new places to eat and socialize – which I anticipate doing a lot of while getting acquainted with the area. I love to bowl and play basketball, and look forward to attempting to improve my weak golf game.
