If you’re wondering what to give a child this holiday season, your options are not limited to toys and clothes. KSMU's Gina Widger reports.

Nancee Dahms-Stinson is the Youth Services Coordinator for the Springfield Greene County Library District. She says books are the classic gift that never goes out of style.

"They are one of the items that hasn't increased in price a lot. They last a lifetime, unlike some gifts, children and adults get attached to a book and they never really want to give it up. They grow with us, they provide hours of entertaining escape. And you know the thing I like about them best is they're really easy to wrap."

She has her own favorite books, several of which she says would make perfect gifts.

"One of my favorites this year is a wordless picture book by Jerry Pinkney called 'The Lion and the Mouse'. It's his retelling of the Aesop fable and Jerry Pinkney does such absolutely fantastic illustrations. They're so evocative that the story doesn't need any words."

Stinson also recommends a book called “Down, Down, Down” by Steve Jenkins and another called “The Day-Glo Brothers, The True Story of Bob and Joe Switzer’s Bright Ideas and Brand-New Colors” by Chris Barton. Both, she says, have colorful illustrations and are perfect gifts for kids. For KSMU News, I'm Gina Widger.
