Because of bridge work, MODOT is encouraging drivers to avoid the 60/65 Interchange this weekend. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

There's a lot going on this weekend: back-to-school shoppers will be out in force with the sales tax holiday, there's the Ozarks Empire Fair...and well, it's still summer time so lots of people are traveling. If you're planning to come into or head out of Springfield this weekend by way of the 60/65 interchange southwest of the city, MODOT spokesman Bob Edwards has some advice.

Edwards acknowledges this is not a good time for this kind of work.

The work at the interchange will focus on repairing damage to the 65 bridges. Edwards says MODOT isn't sure exactly how the damage occurred.

All lanes of Highway 65 will remain OPEN but 65 traffic may be heavier than normal because of a detour that will take westbound 60 traffic north to turn around at the Sunshine Street interchange.

Edwards says it's a good idea to use a map to choose an alternate route BEFORE heading out. He says to drive cautiously on the alternate routes as most of them are two-lanes.
