Members of Missouri's Campus Security Task Force held their second meeting today and heard from law enforcement officers and agents who responded to the massacre at Virginia Tech. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.
The task force listened to presentations from the Virginia State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.
Missouri's Director of Public Safety Mark James co-chairs the Campus Security Task Force. He says the Virginia Tech presentations emphasized that law enforcement from the campus, city, state, and federal levels had all worked well together for a number of years before the shooting.
The Virginia Tech responders outlined another way to save lives in emergency situations. They talked about the importance of communication. Robert Stein is Missouri's Commissioner of Higher Education and co-chairs the Campus Security Task Force. He says communication is important in crisis management on college campuses.
Also at this week's meeting, the task force reviewed preliminary results of a survey from the state's colleges and universities. Public Safety Director Mark James says the survey will help the task force evaluate what schools are doing well and what needs improvement.
The governor has asked the task force to issue a report by August. To prepare the report, the task force will hold two public hearings, one in St Louis and one in Kansas City. The group will also accept comments by email.
