The President of Ethiopia is visiting Springfield for the weekend to participate in a conference hosted by Global Assist Network. Last night, the President spoke at a reception held in his honor. KSMU's Emily Nash reports.
President Girma (GERMA) Wolde (WOLDAE)-Giorgis (GEE-ORGIS) of Ethiopia was warmly welcomed by about 60 members of the community and various state legislators last night the Presidential Banquet.
President Girma is in Springfield this weekend to take part in the Global Assist Network's Summit on Ethiopia.
Faith Community Church has partnered with Global Assist Network to begin the Ethiopia Project that assists orphanages by providing food, shelter, and education.
At the reception, President Gima thanked members of Hope Community church and Global Assist Network for their efforts to help end poverty in Ethiopia.
President Girma says he is very glad he is able to come to the United States of America, particularly Texas and now Springfield, and is thankful to the pastor of Hope Community Church for partnering with him.
President Girma is the first head of state to visit Springfield.
Lawmakers welcomed President Girma with proclamations and gifts at the reception.
Missouri House Representative Bob Dixon said although the President's term has been difficult, President Girma has faithfully served his country.
Global Assist Network Summit on Ethiopia will be held at Hope Community Church March today and tomorrow.
The two-day conference will include non-governmental organizations from around the United States and Canada that work in Ethiopia.
