According to author Wayne Glenn, The Ozarks Greatest Hits; A Photo History of Music in the Ozarks, is aimed at preserving important people, places, and things related to Ozarks music through photographs taken from the 1800s into the 1970s.
Mike Smith recently talked with Glenn about the book and filed this report:
Did you know that Dick Powell, one of Hollywoods biggest stars of the 1930s was born in Mountain View Arkansas and went to high school in Berryville before hitting the road with and singing with dance bands of the day? Or that Lord Mac and the Checkmates played their "refined sound" at the St. Agnes High School prom in the spring of 1966?
These and other historical tidbits about Ozarks music and musicians are compiled in a newly published book titled "The Ozarks Greatest Hits; A Photo History of Music in the Ozarks".
The books author is Wayne Glenn, known to many in the Ozarks through his radio programs on KTXR as "The Old Record Collector".
The book, with over 1300 photographs, features over 2000 musicians from as far east as Flat River Missouri, to Joplin in the southwest corner of the state, and musicians from the Arkansas Ozarks.
In "The Ozarks Greatest Hits", Wayne Glenn documents all aspects of musical performances in the region. Minstrels, brass bands, picking parties, fiddlers contests, jazz performances, radio and TV broadcasts, folk and rock festivals, symphonies, and song writers. Famous and not so famous Ozarks musicians of the last 100 years are featured in the book.
