Camp Bear and Bear Institute

When kids think of summer, learning may be the last thing on their minds. But Myra Miller says kids who go to camp bear this summer will have so much fun, they won't realize they're learning new things. And perhaps most importantly, it won't feel like school.

Miller is the creator of the camp bear and bear institute, two new summer enrichment programs on the campus of Southwest Missouri State University.

There are age-appropriate sessions for young people age 5 to 18. The programs run from one to two weeks and involve two new lessons every week day mixed with plenty of recreational activities.

Miller describes some of the academic lessons designed for kids in kindergarten through second grade.

Older kids will learn money management, computer animation and cross-cultural understanding. And even when kids are participating in recreational activities, miller says they're learning.

Though there are other programs in the area that focus exclusively on recreation or on academics, miller says camp bear is different because it blends recreation and academic enrichment.

She says children of all academic levels are welcome because all children need to continue the learning process during the summer.

The bear institute for high school students is more practical. It includes driver's training, web site design, and preparation for the a-c-t.

There is a cost for both camp bear and bear institute. For more information on these programs, call toll free 1-888-879-7678.
