As Cold Weather Shelters Reach Capacity, Salvation Army Opens Its Doors

The Salvation Army in Springfield opened its doors Tuesday to people needing to get in out of the cold and to help other shelters meet demand. 

The Salvation Army will serve men and women without minor children at its Harbor House location, 636 N. Booneville Avenue in Springfield.  That shelter will also remain open during the daytime hours through Thursday morning, January 31.

People with children under 18 years old may seek shelter at the Salvation Army’s Family Enrichment Center, 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway.  That location will also be open during daytime hours through Thursday morning, January 31, for people with children.

According to the Salvation Army, breakfast and evening meals will be provided at both locations.

The Salvation Army's Family Enrichment Center serves the community from its location at 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway.

A photo ID is required to stay overnight, and the Salvation Army will conduct a background check on people seeking overnight shelter.

According to the National Weather Service, most of the Ozarks region is under a Wind Chill Advisory from 6:00 PM Tuesday until noon Wednesday.  Tuesday night's wind chill is expected to be around -8 degrees, and Wednesday's wind chill is forecast for a low of -12 degrees.

The men’s cold weather shelter (operated by CPO, One Door and other agencies):

 

East Sunshine Church of Christ, at 3721 East Sunshine Street
