Astro Brief: Birth of a Planet

C. Ginski/R. van Capelleveen et al.

Current formation of exoplanet discovered in protoplanetary system Wispit 2.

Approximately 440 light-years away, a young star now shares orbits with a newly forming gas giant. The star system, named WISPIT 2, is still surrounded by large amounts of gas from its formation, but with a few gaps that create lanes. For the first time, a gas giant has been visually confirmed within one of these gaps.

Join us this week as Mike explores a fascinating new discovery in solar system formation.

Astro Brief is a collaboration between KSMU, the Missouri Space Grant, and MSU's Department of Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science. Hosted by Dr. Mike Reed, Astro Brief focuses on astronomical events, the field of astronomy, and astronomy-related guests. It airs Thursdays at 9:45 am on KSMU.

Distinguished Professor of the Missouri State University Department of Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science.
