Septic tanks are underground systems that need to be pumped every 2-3 years at a cost of anywhere between one or two hundred dollars. Melissa Bettes is the project manager at the James River Basin. She says the “Get Pumped” program is a way to cut costs for individuals by registering their septic tank and ensure its being pumped properly.
“If we do not maintain our systems, what it does is that the solids will build up in our tanks and then it will send out solids into our lateral field. Our lateral field is only designed to treat liquids. It is not designed to treat the sludge or the solid. So, maintenance of a tank is the first step we need to do to protect our field from failing,” said Bettes.
The program includes portions of Webster, Christian, Greene, Douglas, Laurence, Barry and Taney counties. Any individual who would like to participate needs to call the office to schedule an appointment.
