January is National Radon Action Month. The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, is encouraging everyone to test their homes for harmful levels of radon gas. KSMU’s Jennifer Moore has details.
Radon is an invisible, odorless, tasteless radioactive gas. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. It doesn’t cause immediate symptoms, but it’s the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
According to the EPA, nearly one in every 15 homes in the US is estimated to have elevated radon levels.
It can enter a home through cracks in the foundation, or through holes or pipes.
That’s why the EPA is recommending that all homes, whether they have basements or not, be tested.
In Springfield, both Lowe’s and The Home Depot carry radon testing kits. They’ll cost you between $10 and $15. Alternatively, you can have radon gas specialist come check out your home—some give free consultations.
