In his annual address, Nixon proposed to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workforce. He said "no Missourian should be fired because of who they are or who they love."
According to the Associated Press, some Republicans expressed caution Wednesday and criticized Nixon for championing the proposal while ignoring other policy initiatives; however, many Democrats are applauding him.
It's unclear what chance the proposal has of surviving in this year's Republican-led legislature. While the Senate did pass it on the last day of session last year, it has not come up for a vote yet in the House.
Missouri's current Employment Non-Discrimination Act forbids discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex and disability in the workforce.
