Tuesday night marked the deadline for signing up to run for one of the five open seats on Springfield's City Council. KSMU’s Rebekah Clark has details.

Mayor Bob Stephens will be running unopposed in the election.  Jeff Seifried and Jan Fisk are also running for re-election.

Cora Scott is the director of public information for the city. She says candidates have to go through a petition process before they can run.

“These are people who have chosen to run for City Council. They are required to go out and find signatures for people to support that, and then they turn in those, what we call, petitions, and then they are able to formally get on the ballot for April.”

Fisk will run against Arthur Hodge for General Council Seat A; Mike Carroll and Craig Hosmer, pending certification, will run for General Seat B. Jeff Seifried has no running opponent, and will run for the Zone 1 Council seat. Craig Fishel, Steve Makoski and Rodney Geurin will run for Zone 4.

“The other seats on council aren’t up for reelection yet, so it’s on a split cycle.”

Scott says community members are welcome to log onto www.springfieldmo.gov to find out more about each candidate.

“In the news section, there is a news release with links to their applications, so you can actually click on the candidates and go to the detailed information they’ve provided.”

You can find a link to that page at our website, www.KSMU.org.

The election is on April 2.

For KSMU News, I’m Rebekah Clark.
