Most residents know Springfield is considered the birthplace of Route 66. But, did you know the Springfield City Council actually designated Route 66 as a revitalization project, with the intent to bring attention and visitors to the area?
Cora Scott, Director of Public Information and Civic Engagement for the City of Springfield, talks about some of the exciting plans in store for this tourist destination. One unique feature of the project includes a mixed-use district of residential and commercial uses, which is designed to supplement the tourist draw. The sign of an exciting and effective development is when private donors and contractors call the city wanting to get involved, and that’s exactly what’s been happening with the Route 66 project. The pinnacle of these efforts is the Route 66 Festival, which will be held this August and will showcase many exciting activities and performers for all ages.
