The Eureka Springs High School EAST lab received a grant of about $4,000 for its butterfly garden. The award was granted by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. KSMU’s Alvin Chen reports.

Environmental and Spatial Technology, or EAST, is an elective class in about 250 high schools across the country in seven states. It’s a class where students are encouraged to use advanced technology and develop projects that help solve community problems.

The butterfly garden at the Eureka Springs High School was planted by EAST students in 2004. Mila Floro is the EAST program facilitator at the Eureka Springs High School.

Since its installation in 2004, the butterfly garden has been maintained with funding from grants and donations from local residents. The garden has also received awards in the America in Bloom National Competition.

Floro says the grant money that the garden received this time will help sustain the garden and keep records of it.

Floro also says a good thing about EAST is that students in the class are responsible for creating their own projects. And that means they’re more invested and more engaged in the learning process.

For KSMU News, I’m Alvin Chen.
