State officials have announced the 2009 route for the Tour of Missouri cycling race, and this year, it won’t include a stop in the state’s third largest city. KSMU’s Jennifer Moore reports.

Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder, who chairs the Missouri Tourism Commission, said 32 cities asked to be involved in this year’s race. Last year, Springfield was chosen as the city to host the finish of stage two of the race.

But this year, the riders will bypass Springfield—and southwest Missouri—altogether. For the first time, the race will take riders through southeast Missouri, and will devote more of the route to agricultural parts of the state than in years past.

The race will begin in St. Louis and end in Kansas City.

Other cities chosen for the route are Cape Girardeau, Farmington, Rolla, St. James, Ste. Genevieve, Jefferson City, Sedalia, Chillicothe and St. Joseph.

The professional cycling race will take place September 7-13, 2009.
