The disaster services team at Springfield-based Convoy of Hope has been deployed to Louisiana to assist with record flooding.

More than half a dozen people have died and some 20,000 people have been evacuated from their homes. Some areas recorded more than 25 inches of rain over a 72-hour period, and many rivers crested several feet above record level.

In a statement, Convoy of Hope President and Co-Founder Hal Donaldson said Monday, “A truckload of food, water, cleaning supplies and hygiene kits has already been delivered and is being distributed. An additional two loads of relief supplies will arrive in the affected areas later today.”

According to Donaldson, once the Disaster Services team meets immediate needs, they will shift into helping families remove debris and clean their homes.

“As with all disasters we respond to, we plan to help families get back on their feet,” Donaldson adds. “Sometimes that can take weeks, months or even years.”
