A grant from the U.S. Department of Education will help some Ozarks history teachers go back to being a student in the classroom. KSMU's Christy Hendricks reports.

Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield will grant some Ozarks teachers a chance to further their history education.

27 social studies teachers from Ozarks high schools have been selected to participate in a Master of Arts graduate program.

Marc Cooper is a professor of history at SMSU.

He secured a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to fund the American History Education Enhancement Project.

The grant pays for tuition costs for teachers to receive 32-graduate level courses, laptop computers and broadband internet for their homes.

Cooper says this is the second grant for the program.

This grant will pay nine-hundred-83-thousand dollars over three years.

He says the entire cost for both grants over six years will total one-point-eight million dollars.

He says most history teachers have little background in American history.

Marc Cooper says the American History Education Enhancement Project will help to better educate students by introducing more hands-on projects in school.

Marc Cooper says the schools taking part in the program include Republic, Nixa, Ozark, Marshfield, and Springfield Public Schools.
