With senior military and diplomatic experiences from all over the world, General Powell will serve as the keynote speaker on this year's convocation theme, Global Perspectives.

"He tends to speak from the heart," said Wood.

That’s Mary Ann Wood, director of MSU Public Affairs Support, who says Powell’s speech will focus on global events and why they matter to the general public.

"It is our hope he will express to our students and our local community people that attend the importance of being aware of and knowing what's going on around the world… Things that happen around the world do impact us here in Springfield Missouri," said Wood.

Currently, Powell is a member of the board of directors for the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also on the Executive Leadership Cabinet of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and on the board of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.

However, he is most well-known for his former position as Secretary of State under President George W. Bush.

The event, scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, March 20 at JQH arena, is open to the general public, but tickets are required to attend. They can be picked up at the Hammons Hall, JQH Arena or Plaster Student Union ticket offices, or requested by phone at 417-836-7678.

As of Thursday, more than 3,500 tickets have been reserved.
