The American Red Cross Southern Missouri Region and KY3 News want to hear your story of a local individual who made a difference in your life. Those people can now be nominated for the 2012 Everyday Heroes Award. KSMU’s Rebekah Clark has details.

The 2012 Everyday Heroes nominations are open through January 15. Greg James is the chief development officer for the Red Cross. He says the nominations range from people who went above and beyond the call of duty in the time of need, volunteers who help others, to people who have saved a life.

“That might be a person that helps someone that would observe a house on fire and run up to the door. That’s been some of the past stories we’ve had, where they saved that family, or somebody needed help. It’s also been heroes of lifetime achievement—maybe a school counselor that has helped young people for 20 or 30 years that has changed a lot of lives. We’ve had all different types of people honored through this event.”

Usually, James says they get over 100 nominations. The Red Cross will pick about eight to 10 nominees to be recognized at a banquet in March.

“We honor them at that event, presenting them with a plaque of their accomplishment as an everyday hero. Their stories are done in a video that our partner, KY3, does. They go out and do a story on each of the heroes and what happened during their event.”

James says all nominees chosen for the award will be recognized for a hero act that happened within the calendar year of 2012, with the exception of a Lifetime Hero nomination.

The lunch to honor those selected will be held on March 27, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Ramada Oasis Hotel & Convention Center in Springfield. Lunch will be served with all proceeds benefiting the Red Cross.
