A team from Ozarks-based Convoy of Hope is in the Gulf Coast region to distribute food and resources to people affected by Hurricane Isaac. KSMU’s Rebekah Clark has more.
In a press release, Convoy of Hope says five trucks from the organization filled with over 260,000 pounds of food, water, cleaning supplies and generators are already in the Gulf Coast area; at least seven others are ready to go down to the Coast between now and next Wednesday. Plans are also in place to coordinate debris removal teams.
Jeff Nene, spokesman for Convoy, says many rural communities suffered heavy losses, with some neighborhoods still under at least 12 feet of water. He says thousands of families are without power and in need of clean water, and tens of thousands of people have been evacuated.
Nene says the mobile units will be able to reach more people with food and supplies once the water level recedes.
Convoy sent seven staff members from Springfield down to assist Gulf residents; they’re asking local volunteers from that area to help in the distribution.
