Sister Cities Gigs In The Garden 2022

Springfield Sister Cities Association's Gigs in the Garden, an outdoor concert series, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sundays, May 1, 8, 15, and 22, 2022. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy a variety of local performance groups in an extraordinary setting.

Admission is free with a $10 suggested donation. The concerts take place at the Peace Through People Pavilion located within the Kay Cummins Finnie Memorial Dogwood Garden at the Springfield Botanical Gardens at Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park.

Mark Barger kicks off the series on Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m. Barger is a solo acoustic guitarist, loop artist, and troubadour in the genre of folk, funk, rock, reggae, and soul. Barger’s soul-drenched vocals intrigue audiences along with his storytelling and personal narrative.

MOJO Lite performs on Sunday, May 8 at 2 p.m. MOJO Lite is a jazz combo in the tradition of mainstream small jazz groups like Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley, and Woody Shaw. The septet is made up of members of the Missouri Jazz Orchestra.

Auntie Em and the Tornadoes play with special guest David Wilson on Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. Songwriter Emily Higgins, Bo Brown (dobro, mandolin, guitar), and George Horne (bass) perform Higgins’ original music with special guest David Wilson (fiddle, mandolin).

The Shandies round out the series on Sunday, May 22 at 2 p.m. Shannon Stine and Natalie Wlodarczyk are an acoustic folk pop songwriting duo. They traveled to Springfield’s sister city of Isesaki, Japan in August 2019 to represent Springfield and perform at Isesaki’s city festival.

Arrive early on Sunday, May 22 for the Springfield Sister Cities Annual Celebration from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The event features cultural performances, Mexican and Japanese food trucks, and drinks. Sister Cities members receive free food and drink vouchers; purchase a membership at the event or at peacethroughpeople.org/membership.

In the case of inclement weather, the concerts will move inside the adjacent Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center.
