Nigel Holderby, spokesperson for the American Red Cross, Southern Missouri Region, which is presenting Academy 2013, says it’s a coincidence that the event is occurring during the week of the anniversary of the Joplin tornado.
Academy 2013 will be held at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin where, two years ago, a shelter was set up following the tornado that killed 161 people.
The event will feature guest speakers and courses aimed at individuals, businesses and congregations. Holderby says the classes are designed to help people understand what to do in case a disaster happens…
"You can get a free CPR and first aid certification class. There are classes that will be talking about, for instance, we've got the active shooter class where it talks about what to do if there is a situation in your office or in your school where you've got an active shooter and how to be prepared for that. We've got the "Getting Your Congregation Involved in Disaster Response," she said.
Other classes will include “Shelter Fundamentals” and “Psychological First Aid.”
Academy 2013 is today through Friday at Billingsly Student Center on the MSSU campus in Joplin. You may attend a single course, a day or all five days.
