National Weather Service Meteorologist Eric Wise says a strong storm system is currently pushing its way across the southwest United States sending moisture our way.

Wise says we may see a few flurries this afternoon, but most of the precipitation will hold off until this evening and overnight…

"We're expecting snow to begin to start the system off and then we'll transition into sleet and freezing rain overnight into Thursday morning," he said.

The precipitation is expected to taper off from west to east late tomorrow afternoon into the evening.  According to Wise, accumulation amounts will vary across the region…

"The greatest ice accumulation we're expecting right now is gonna occur across southern Missouri.  We could see up to a quarter of an inch with locally heavier amounts, and the greatest snow and sleet accumulations will occur farther north across central Missouri onto the north.  But everybody can expect at least some snow, sleet and freezing rain to occur," he said.

Wise says there will be some instability with the system—some areas might see some thunder and lightning, which could produce some locally heavier precipitation.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has issued a winter travel advisory for Southwest Missouri.  MODOT workers will be on duty as the storm approaches and will begin treating and plowing roads as soon as conditions begin to deteriorate.  But they say there could be downed power lines and trees on roadways that drivers will need to watch out for.
