The US Census Bureau says it’s stepping up its efforts to recruit local residents to work on the 2010 Census. KSMU's Jennifer Moore has details.

It will be hiring nearly 9,000 temporary workers in Missouri alone between now and July. The Census Bureau says applicants must be U.S Citizens, 18 years or older, have a valid Social Security number, and be available to work 20-40 hours per week. They will be expected to take a general competency test and undergo a background check. All census takers must be able to speak English, but there is a need for bilingual speakers also. The mandate for conducting a census every 10 years is found in the United States Constitution. The information gathered in the census is used for research, funding, and representation in Congress. For more information, you can call the US Census Bureau at 1-866-861-2010, or go online to www.2010census.gov.For KSMU News, I'm Jennifer Moore.
