Seven used car dealerships in Missouri will have to pay up for violations which may have compromised the safety of people buying their cars. KSMU's Jennifer Moore has details.

Attorney General Chris Koster’s office says some dealerships were selling cars and trucks without requiring safety inspections, and others were issuing temporary tags on vehicles sold with junk or salvage affidavits.

A few dealerships required customers to sign an affidavit saying the cars were not for immediate use, but allowed them to test drive those cars and even drive them off the lot.

The used car dealerships were scattered throughout St. Louis, Kansas City, St. Joseph and Springfield. The attorney general’s office says Supercars, Inc. of Springfield is one of them; it will have to pay $7,500 in restitution for selling some cars without safety inspections.

Koster is asking anyone who recently purchased a vehicle from other dealerships without a valid safety inspection or title to contact his office at www.ago.mo.gov or by calling the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-392-8222.
