Bob Dixon's passion for art-education programs in Missouri has earned him an award for his efforts. KSMU's Chasity Mayes has more.

State legislator, Bob Dixon of Springfield received the 2009 Frederick Laas Memorial Award by Missouri Citizens for the Arts on Wednesday.

In 2007, Representative Dixon began working with the student run committee “Show Me Arts” at Logan-Rogersville High School. At that time, Dixon and the students drafted a Resolution, which Dixon then sponsored during the 2008 legislative session.

Eventually, Dixon’s efforts led to a local partnership between the Missouri Alliance for Art Education and the Show Me Arts committee in support of a bill that would provide funding for regional fine arts coordinators.

Dixon said that he feels the arts are an important part of any child’s education.

Those associated with the Missouri Alliance for Art Education say that Dixon has ignited a creative spark in the arts-education community.

For KSMU News, I'm Chasity Mayes.
