Tornado Tears Up Historic Downtown Ava

Just after six a.m. today a tornado ripped through downtown Ava, in south central Missouri. KSMU's Jennifer Moore surveyed the damage with Teresa Tost of the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management.

Broken glass, fallen trees and downed power lines littered the streets leading up to the square.

One home had lost its roof; another had its entire front porch blown away.

As of 2:00 Friday afternoon, the Douglas County Office of Emergency Management staff were sitting in the dark in the courthouse basement, waiting for the power to come back on.

The flagpole in the center of the square was bent to a 45 degree angle. An old, two-story brick building on the square was missing the entire front part of the building.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the tornado.
