Flooding this week in Southwest Missouri has the potential to cause environmental problems in the area. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.
As flood waters begin to recede, there are concerns that chemicals and other dangerous materials could cause environmental problems.
Larry Archer is spokesman for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
Archer says DNR officials from Springfield and Poplar Bluff have been responding to the floods.
There are several large areas of standing water throughout the region. Archer says it's not safe to be in flood water.
To help limit your exposure to dangerous substances, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has information available about handling chemicals and other materials as you clean up your home or business.
Archer says it's important to properly deal with wastewater and hazardous household chemicals after a flood.
DNR has a website that provides information on how to safely handle these kinds of materials. We have a link to that website at KSMU.org
