Approximately 14 hundred volunteers were expected to take place in this year's United Way Day of Caring. More than 60 businesses and organizations will be involved in completing over 160 projects within the Springfield Area. KSMU's Joe Morgan visited one on the projects and has more.

About 40 volunteers gathered in the training room at the Red Cross Headquarters on West Bypass to get their assignments and head to work. While these volunteers were lending a hand, more than a thousand other volunteers around the Springfield Area were gearing up to help on a day known for love and caring. Volunteer Karen Stewart explains why she enjoys helping.

Long time volunteer Thelma Harris explains what decision has to be made to be an effective helper and what she gets out of volunteering.

Volunteer Victor Frank worked on expanding a ramp in the Red Cross warehouse.

Red Cross Director of Volunteers Perry Elkins says this improvement will have an immediate impact within the community.

Elkins says that there is always things that need to be done with the Red Cross and volunteers of all ages and skill levels are welcome.

If you are interested in helping the Red Cross, there will be a link along with this story at ksmu.org. For KSMU News, I'm Joe Morgan.
