May 5th, the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce named the Small Business of the Year. Mike Smith has the story:
Continuing the celebration and recognition of Small Business Week, the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce held its W. Curtis Strube
Small Business of the Year Awards Luncheon Wednesday, May 5 th . The award, named for the late Director of the Breech school of Business at Drury University , went to Millwood Golf and Racquet Club.
In a news release announcing the award, the Chamber says: "With President Keith Keltner at the helm, Millwood is among five percent of U.S. country clubs to show a profit last year." Keltner told KSMU News he's shocked and surprised at receiving the award:
The chamber's program also recognized 4 other small businesses as finalists for the W. Curtis Strube (STROO-bee) Small Business of the Year Award:
Amberg Entertainment'Andy's Frozen Custard'Custom Manufacturing and Polishing Inc'..and Wood Brite Inc.
An independent panel of judges based its selection on staying power,
response to adversity, innovative products or services, business philosophy,
and contributions to the community. Ron Bottin, (boh-TEEN) dean of SMSU's College of Business , served as a judge. He says all the businesses nominated for the award were strong contenders.
Millwood Golf and Racquet club has grown to over 500 members since it was established in 1995. The club has 30 full time employees.
Millwood President Keith Keltner's business philosophy is simple but effective. While giving credit to the men and women who work at Millwood, he says to let the customers needs guide the path to success.
