The National Park Service Lewis and Clark display "Corps of Discovery II: 200 Years to the Future" will be open at the National Fish and Wildlife Museum and Zooquairium, Wonders of Wildlife, through April 25th. Mike Smith has the story :
"Corps of Discovery II: 200 Years to the Future", has been described as a National Park on wheels. This free event features the 40'x70' "Tent of Many Voices" housing live performances, audio visual programs, cultural presentations, and demonstrations. An exhibit tent will feature a time line of the Lewis and Clark journey.
Helping the National Park Service make this possible are local musicians and story tellers, and representatives of Southwest Missouri State University, Ozarks Technical Community College, The City of Springfield, The Missouri Departments of Conservation and Natural Resources, The U.S.G.S., the Celtic Society of the Ozarks, and a number of other organizations and individuals. Jeff Olson, the Public Information Officer for the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail says everyone helping out brings a wealth of expertise to the exhibit. He says, along with period musical performances, scholars, historians, conservationists, map makers, scientists, and even chefs will give visitors a historic perspective of the Lewis and Clark Expedition which traveled from Washington D.C. to the Pacific Ocean between 1803 and 1806.
Programs offered include discussions on encounters with Native Americans and how natural resources were managed,
How dug out canoes are built, and how Lewis and Clark mapped and took measurements of the land and rivers they crossed in their quest to reach the Pacific.
The Corps of Discovery II exhibit will be open from 9:30-5:30 each day through April 25 th , but Jeff Olson says during school days, because of the large number of school children coming to the event, some may want to schedule a visit in the afternoons or on weekends. Olson also hopes visitors will take time to see Wonders of Wildlife before or after visiting Corps of Discovery II.
