Weekend Outlook August 3-5, 2018

City of Springfield

The Park Day Reunion is Friday through Sunday (8/3-8/5) at Silver Springs Park, Activities include tennis and bowling tournaments, a gospel music concert, a picnic, car show, swimming and more.

The Drew Lewis Foundation’s fourth annual Fashion Forward event will start Friday night (8/3) at 6 at the Fox Theatre on Park Central Square.  Models will be children from families participating in the Northwest Project. 

The 82nd annual Ozark Empire Fair continues through Saturday (8/4) in Springfield.  The fair features exhibits, rides, food and more. 

The Wizard of Oz will be shown during Family Movie Nightat the Library Friday night (8/3) at 6:30 at the Library Center. 

Springfield Contemporary Theatre presents “The Elephant Man” through Sunday (8/5). 

First Friday Art Walk is Friday night (8/3) from 6 to 10 at various venues in downtown Springfield. 

As part of First Friday Art Walk, the Park Central Branch Library invites the public to make zines Friday night (8/3) from 6 to 9.    Learn more here

The Emancipation Park Days Celebration will be held Friday through Sunday (8/3-8/5) at 7th and Southeast Murphy Blvd. in Joplin.  The celebration of freedom will include music, soul food, dancing and more. 

Friends of Timmons Temple will host anOpen House at Timmons Hall Saturday (8/4) from noon to 3 and Sunday (8/5) from 3 to 7 p.m. at Silver Springs Park.  There will be free refreshments, a history exhibit, tours and a chance to share stories.

Unity of Springfield, 2214 E. Seminole in Springfield, will host the Back to School Bash Friday (8/3) from 1 to 6.  Kids will get a backpack and school supplies while they last, a dental checkup and a haircut. 

Yoga on the Square is at 12:10 Friday afternoon (8/3) on Park Central Square.  Take a yoga mat and water.  Admission is free. 

The 15th annual Kid’Athlon is Saturday (8/4) at Meador Park, 2500 S. Fremont.  The mini triathlon for kids will divide participants into various age categories.  Registration is due Friday, August 2.

Family Friday in the Garden continues Friday night (8/3) at 7:30 at Nathanael Greene-Close Memorial Park, 2400 S. Scenic in Springfield.  The topic is “From Trail of Tears to Greenways Trail.”  Meet on the Rooftop Plaza at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center. 

Marian Days 2018 continues through Sunday (8/5) at the CMC Camp Grounds in Carthage.  It’s a gathering of Vietnamese Catholics from around the world.  The event includes various food kiosks, a farmer’s market and vendors selling cultural items. 

Eureka Springs, Arkansas will host Yards and Yards of Yard Sales Friday and Saturday (8/3-8/4).  A digital map of the sales is available online. 

Summer Diversity Weekend is Friday through Sunday (8/3-8/5) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, hosted by Out in Eureka. 

George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond will host a free Junior Ranger Day Saturday (8/4).  The event gives kids 8 to 12-year-old a chance to learn more about Carver and find out what it’s like to be a park ranger. 

Carver Laboratory Demonstrations will take place Saturday (8/4) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond. 

The 2018 Diaper Bank of the Ozark Diaper Dash is Saturday (8/4) at the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, 3861 E. Stan Musial Drive in Springfield.  The event will include a one mile fun run, a 5K and 10K, inflatables, face painting and more. 

The Little Acorns program, Hey, Big Daddy, for ages three to six, will be held Saturday morning (8/4) at 10 at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center.

“Frolic of the Mind: The Illustrious Life of Rose O’Neill” is on exhibit at the Springfield Art Museum, 1111 E. Brookside Drive, through August 5. 

The exhibit, “Birthplace of Route 66, Memories of the Mother Road,” is currently on display at the History Museum on the Square on Park Central Square in Springfield. 

The Lebanon Farmer’s Market will be open Saturday (8/4) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown Lebanon, off Jefferson by the railroad tracks.  

The C-Street City Market will be open Saturday (8/4) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. near the Footbridge on Commercial Street. 

The Greater Ozarks Farmers’ Market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday (8/4) in the southeast corner of the Battlefield Mall Parking Lot. 

Farmers’ Market of the Ozarks will be open Saturday (8/4) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2144 E. Republic Rd. in Springfield.

The Eureka Springs, Arkansas Farmer’s Market will be open Saturday (8/4) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Eureka Springs Community Center, 44 Kingshighway. 

The Bob Holden Jazz Ensemble will give a concert Sunday afternoon (8/5) at 2 at the Library Center.  The band features players ages 15-77, allowing young musicians the chance to learn jazz styles and perform with professionals and other experienced musicians.

Michele Skalicky has worked at KSMU since the station occupied the old white house at National and Grand. She enjoys working on both the announcing side and in news and has been the recipient of statewide and national awards for news reporting. She likes to tell stories that make a difference. Michele enjoys outdoor activities, including hiking, camping and leisurely kayaking.
