Congressman Todd Akin visited Springfield Wednesday to speak with supporters at the Greene County Republican headquarters.  Protesters chanted and waived signs to passing cars outside in the drizzling rain while about an equal number of supporters waited inside for Akin to speak. KSMU’s Shane Franklin was at the rally, and has this story.

Akin spoke to his supporters mostly about the different options Missouri voters have in the coming election. He compared his own policies to those of Senator Claire McCaskill, citing that she had voted in line with President Barack Obama’s policies 98% of the time, while claiming to be a moderate.

“I’m trying to make the case before you, that you got a choice. It’s a choice about who you want for the Senate, buts its a choice about which America you want, isn’t it?”

In addition to comparing the voter’s choices, Akin announced his support from Rick Santorum and reaffirmed the support from other Republican leaders, like Newt Gingrich, and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

Akin says he is bouncing back from the earlier misstatements about rape and abortion that he has since apologized for.

For KSMU News, I’m Shane Franklin.
