Earth Day is April 22nd, and the city of Springfield, plans to host events during the month of April to celebrate it. KSMU's Emily Nash gives us a preview of the 2007 Earth Day activities.
The City of Springfield invites all ages to celebrate the 37th annual Earth Day.
But it's not just one day that's being celebrated.
During the month of April the city is hosting a variety of hands-on projects and education opportunities that promote the conservation of the environment.
Barbra Lucks is the Materials Recovery and Education Coordinator for the City of Springfield.
She explains how Earth Day was founded.
The month long celebration kicks off with a tree sale at the Missouri Entertainment and Events Center and garden clean up at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center on Saturday April 14th.
Events continue the following week with nature walks, neighborhood clean ups, and the Environmental Excellence Awards.
The biggest Earth Day activity takes place Saturday April 21st with a special celebration at the Discovery Center.
Lucks says, there will be safety demonstrations, kids activities, and a film festival throughout the day.
She says, on Saturday people can also get a free vehicle check up.
Tree City U.S.A. Citizen Advisory Committee will hold a day long program called "Conservation of Trees" at the Discovery Center on Saturday April 21st as well.
Lucks says, this program is especially important after the loss of trees from the ice storm.
The Springfield Conservation Nature Center will be hosting outdoor work projects on Saturday April 21st.
Projects include habitat restoration and helping woodchip parts of the Nature Center trails.
Sunday April 22nd is the official Earth Day, and Dickerson Park Zoo will hold a Party for the Planet.
Earth Day events are free and are open to all ages.
