With national efforts being made to show the importance of after school programs, Springfield organizations are holding a rally in support of keeping the programs a priority. KSMU's Chasity Mayes has more.

Springfield is joining national efforts to keep after school programs alive in the Ozarks. “Lights on Afterschool” is a national campaign that was created to bring awareness to the role that after school programs play in the lives of children across the country.

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board, Boys and Girls Club of Springfield, and the Ozarks Regional YMCA will hold a rally tonight (Thursday, 10/22) at McGregor Elementary from 6 until 8 to showcase what after school resources are available and to talk about the importance of these programs.

Sandra Pratt, Greene County’s School Park Administrator says the event will include many speakers who will help parents find solutions to finding an after school program for their children.

Keeping kids safe and healthy, helping them learn, and relieving parents of the stress associated with leaving children home alone after school will all be targeted at tonight’s rally.

For more information call the Greene-County Park Board at 874-2176.
