With less than a month left of school for Springfield Public Schools, students and teachers start thinking about summer plans.

Springfield's school district wants kids to continue learning throughout the summer and has some innovative classes to offer.

KSMU's Christy Hendricks reports.

No longer is summer school just for students struggling in school.

Springfield Public Schools offers some unique specialty courses to enrich kids' learning.

Steve Boyce is the coordinator of summer school for Springfield Public Schools.

He says ArtWorks allows kids to make fun and creative projects.

Boyce says specialty classes cater to elementary students interested in particular topics.

Steve Boyce says a course with a different twist on writing will entice middle school students.

Boyce says another class borrows from the crime shows on TV to solve mysteries.

High school students can choose from three different classes for college credit.

Steve Boyce says students don't have to attend Springfield Public Schools throughout the year to go to summer school.

Boyce says any student who lives in Missouri can attend.

Summer school begins June 14 and runs through July 20th.
