A Springfield humanitarian organization—Friends Against Hunger—says it would like to help refugees fleeing famine in Somalia. However, it’s faced with a problem. KSMU’s Jennifer Moore has details.
The organization has run out of soy, a key ingredient in the high-protein, vitamin enriched food packets it ships around the world.
A news release from Friends Against HungerThursday says although it’s warehouse is half full of rice and other ingredients, it will have to buy $20,000 dollars worth of soy to replenish its supply.
Friends Against Hunger is asking for donations to make this happen. It’s also asking for volunteers who would like to package the food packets.

The United States estimates that more than 29,000 Somali children under age five have died in the country’s famine in the last three months alone.
Those who can are fleeing to neighboring Kenya. Refugees on the journey are having to make unimaginably cruel choices of which children stand the best chance of surviving without much food and water, and who should be left behind.
