The Glenstone License Office in Springfield will open today in a new location at the corner of Grand and Glenstone and under new management. KSMU’s Missy Shelton reports.

Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks won the contract to operate the Glenstone License Office in Springfield. For years, Missouri governors of both political parties handed out license office contracts to their supporters. That has changed and now non-profit organizations get extra consideration in the bid process. Crystal Webster is executive director of BCFO. She says it makes sense for non-profits to be involved in licensing offices since they give back to the community.

Webster says, “To me, it seems only fitting that the return from these once state operated processes should go back into the community, into non-for-profit operations. You look at an entity like Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks and we measure our return in terms of programs: How many local women can we help who are impacted by breast cancer? How many mammograms can we pay for? To a degree, it seems really just, in my mind.”

The idea for BCFO to bid on a license office came from a supporter of the organization who had experience running a license office. This same supporter has also provided guidance in setting up the new office. But Webster says there have been some challenges.
